Such a Resourceful Daddy

Yesterday we were in downtown Cary taking pictures of my friend Teri.
(Yes, the above photo is of my little cottage that they renovated and turned into a bridal store. So adorable).

Jake was at the library there so he met us and kept an eye on Amaryllis. As he stated, he was trying to run her tired so she did laps up and down Academy street while I took photos.

The sidewalks are old brick, and being that she is a newbie in the art of running in flip-flops, she apparently took a few tumbles. I came upon them sitting on the church steps and Amaryllis looked like this--cheeks flushed, sweaty, panting, and gulping water.

"We had an accident" Jake said. Then I saw the wet bandanna wrapped around her knee.

There was something about the scene that will stay with me forever--one of those motherhood moments where you see your child instantly grow-up in 1 glance. I literally snapped a photo, and by the time my eye left the viewfinder and I looked at her again, in that split second I knew I would remember that scene forever. Because something about her in that moment changed and a little more of her babyhood seemed to leave her.

My little Amaryllis is growing up.

And when I was going through these photos, they made me laugh out loud and almost cry at the same time.

I don't know why, but it struck me as funny. First of all, how awesome is Jake for carrying a bandanna in his backpack (which he informed me, he has done since middle school. What a boy scout). But it made me slightly sad (the good sad) because Amaryllis looked so grown up with her scraped knees, chugging water, and explaining in her broken chatter toddlerspeak that she was wearing a bandana because she fell.

**sigh**

Anywho, it will be a good scene for my mommy memory box because it gets funnier. The next time I saw them, her knee looked like this:
Note too self: red bandannas have lots of red dye in them! Luckily a good scrub in the bath tub that night got rid of the red knee.

Oh and checkout this awesome biked parked in front of the library:

And here are a few more April pictures.

Cooking with Schrammah:

Licking more than just the spatula:

A skelton Easter (we didn't know we'd stay at the beach so long, therefore I hadn't planned ahead and brought her real Easter basket. We made do with this fancily decorated table scattered with marshmallows and she was none the wiser!).

Making Kensington hold hands during all of Jungle Book.

And as you can tell, Kenzi has mastered the worried/concerned/raised eyebrow expression quite well.

I took some more photos of Kensington in a newborn cocoon that my friend knitted and I will post those later. What a sweet and easy-going baby she is. Jake and I both agree we have enjoyed the "newborness" much more this time around because we aren't so anxious for her to grow up.

We both know it will come.

And it will come

way

too

fast.

I'm glad you explained the red knee....that was a little scary for a while.

What a great post. You are a very talented writer. Such a way with words. My heart throbbed a little for you when I read about Amaryllis losing babyhood. I know what you mean, even though I'm nearly a year behind you. It's like you blink and they're bigger!

And that bike is killer. I can totally imagine Giff and Duff on that thing!
