It was the Elementary school PTA jog-a-thon. The biggest fundraising event of the year.
There they were, complete opposites in physical appearance. She was the tallest blondest whitest girl in the class. He was the shortest blackest boy in the class. Aye, they were even deskmates inside the classroom--destined to sit across from each other all year, destined to be competitive in their academics and now, destined to be competitive in their athleticism. Who would win?
The gun sounded (not really, no guns at elementary schools). They were off. Neck and neck for the first lap. Leaders of the pack by a long shot. Her mom, cheering from the sidelines.
And then, there was a mishap! Could it be? Legs tangled on top of other legs. Would they come out even? Who would end up ahead? And was there foul play involved? (zoom in).

But, since this is school, there were no tears shed. Mom is surprised from the sidelines, as there has ALWAYS been tears shed after a fall. Perhaps the athlete is growing up. Or perhaps at school, the peer pressure for crybabies is too much to bear. We'll never know.
BUT, the race continued and one by one the kindergartners faded. Except the 2 deskmates. They went strong the whole 20 minutes.
I suppose we'll see what the year brings us for these fiercely competitive little kiddos.
And, speaking of school, how abouts this fine looking walkingpool group:
