April Showers Bring May Flowers

Well in case you were wondering, the weather hasn't really changed from April to May.  It did rain once and people talked about it the entire week.  Pretty funny.

I fear this blog has fallen to below last place on my to-do list.  I really truly wanted to make a 2011 Highlight movie from our home video clips since the girls are obsessed with our 2010 one, but after moving it from my to-do list month to month I finally gave up and it didn't make it to the May list.  Sad.

Amaryllis and I took a quick visit to Utah to help Kelsey while she was on bedrest.   Yes I really did do housework.  She texted Jake the pict of me mopping, so now my cover is blown--thanks a lot kdawg.

I've noticed that Amaryllis gets carsick around 4 hrs or so in the car (and of course you'll recall our turbulent flight here to CA where she barfed and my natural instinct was to reach out and catch it.  Still trying to figure out that one.)

Anyways I had some Dramamine in my bag so I gave her 1/4 of a pill as directed.  I about drove off the road when I looked back and saw her dozing---the child that never ever sleeps outside of her bed.  Here she is trying so hard to watch her show and lick her ring pop while falling asleep:

It was fun to see our Utah people, and we stopped in Vegas both times at my uncle and aunt's house (world's sweetest people) and it was so fun to catch up with them.  In college we would go to Vegas more often and see them so it has been awhile and it was kind of weird to be visiting them with my 4 yr old instead of my roommates.

Something really cute was that Amaryllis knew we were going to sleep in the bed together so she waited up for me the last night of our trip.  I was laying there trying not to move so she'd go to sleep and she whispers, "mom--do you want to hold hands?".  It was the perfect sweet memory for our trip.  It was so fun to spend one-on-one time with her and remind myself of all her special qualities and to focus on her fun little 4 yr old personality.

Other than that, we've been keeping busy with the gym, park, pool, beach, friends, rompers, swim lessons, dates, tantrums, and the girls first real appearance of sibling squabbles (which I'm still not sure what I'm suppose to do about it).  They play really well together but they definitely have their off days.  And when it's an "off" day it is OFF all day long.

Oh, and just so you don't think that our life is full of blissful sunshine, picking daisies, cuddles, and hugs, I will share this clip with you:

Ah.  Look at that Emily Bartlett.  She's such a good mom.  She does cool activities with her kids.  The sun shines, the birds chirp, her girls are little angels while they learn from educational hands-on activities that she so effortlessly prepares for them.

Let me just tell you this ended horribly.  It all started because I saw everyone pinning cute little "sensory activities" on Pinterest.  It made me stop and think.  Have I ever done a sensory activity? Will my kids be branded dummies and losers? Are they learning enough? Am I being a good mom? I panicked.  What am I thinking not doing little fun activities with dyed spaghetti noodles and bathtubs filled with weird squishy concoctions every day during "learning time"?  OH NO! I'm failing as a mother! Must do a sensory activity!!!

So I settled on a tray with flour.  Seemed easy enough.  It went fine until I turned my back for like 3 minutes.  I come back out to the patio.  Flour everywhere.  Both girls are crying b/c they got it in their eyes.  I'm annoyed.  This dumb activity only lasted 3 minutes and now look at this blasted mess that will take me at least 30 mins to clean up.  I cut on the spicket to hose off the patio, and that turned out to be a huge mistake because flour + water = goooy mess.  Both kids still screaming and rubbing their eyes.  The hose had dirt on it.  Dirt + water from the hose = mud on my white skirt.  Awesome.  It took like honestly no joke about 1 hr to calm them down, get the gooy flour mixture out of their eyes and clean up the patio.

I have "unfollowed" those zealous stay-at-home-moms from my Pinterest newsfeed.

Next time my kids need a sensory activity I'll dump them in the balls at Chuck-E-Cheese.

Love that AV wanted to hold your hand while you fell asleep, for cute!

And Flour? That's hilarious. I did one with beans and rice once, it lasted for 10 min. We haven't done it since. Although on pinterest, I saw someone did glowsticks in the bathtub. Best idea ever! you should seriously try it. No mess was the best part.

Hilarious! Great post. Weren't you the one to tell me you give your girls water buckets on the back porch? That's totally sensory. As is playing at the beach. You don't have to create situations for them to get the exposure they need. Funny story, though!
And I about melted hearing the hand holding story. That is really sweet.

I love it! Funny story! We miss you - B was just telling me about one of her favorite friends from Raleigh AV and that she missed her.
